CEO’s Thoughts (April Newsletter)
29 April 2021
Welcome to our April newsletter.
As we move through the roadmap out of lockdown, it is great to see that we can start to offer support to young people in more of a recognisable delivery model. Young people have been brilliant at coping with all the changes and milestones, exams then no exams, but as members of our communities it is important that we all show them support and encouragement. It has been heartening to hear stories of local businesses and companies sticking to promises of apprenticeships and real opportunities for those finding themselves in long-term employment. This is what makes our communities so great.
There are loads of good stories in this newsletter. Our youth survey has provided the voice for local young people. We are so pleased that over 700 young people took the time to complete this survey and thank each and every one of them. Let’s hope we can get your voices listened to.
In the survey, young people identified their need for a “safe space”, a massive priority for them. I’m delighted to report that the Waterside project is nearing completion. The centre is starting to look great and will be a tribute to the young people who have seen so many services cut and centres closed down. This really is terrific news and we are now developing those partnerships to make the offer the best possible place for young people to engage in positive activities and out of school opportunities. We have had some local support from companies and individuals but it would be even better if at this point more local companies and business could come forward to support the project and in turn the young people of Newbury. We were hoping to take the building from the builders on the 1 June but, as with all significant refurbishments, there has been some delay in the supply of materials and we are now hoping for a mid-June final completion date. We are currently working hard to get a summer programme ready for the school holidays.
Looking forward to welcoming you all to the centre in the very near future!
