Tilehurst Parish Council Update

27 February 2023

Thank you to youth worker Jessica for this great update!

Youth Club
The Tilehurst Parish Council Youth Club has been very busy, with activities including: cooking, elephant football, arts and crafts, board games, slime-making and a scrap material fashion show. Young people have suggested other activities they’d like to do after February half term too, which we’re looking forward to!

Cooking has been very popular recently, with the young people making triple chocolate brownies and pizza bagels, as well as pancakes for Pancake Day! Some Easter-themed cooking is planned for March in the run up to the Easter holidays.

In the past few weeks, the Oreo game has become a favourite to play at sessions. One of the volunteers came up with it after seeing a similar activity online – cups filled with yummy and not so yummy – surprises (ketchup, mushy peas, honey, mustard, yoghurt, and so on) are taped to the side of a table, and young people roll or slide an Oreo across, trying to get it into a cup.

‘Kicks’ Sessions at Cotswold Sports Centre
The Reading Football Club Community Trust ‘Kicks’ sessions are still running every Thursday in term time until Thursday 30 March. They run from 4 – 5pm at Cotswold Sports Centre, RG31 6SL.

Sessions are for young people in school years 7 – 9; they do not need to come in football kit, but PE style clothing is recommended, and they will also need a water bottle. To book a place, please complete this form.

Great British Spring Clean!
Keep Britain Tidy’s annual ‘Great British Spring Clean’ is coming up, running from 17 March – 2 April. As part of the campaign, Berkshire Youth is partnering with the Tilehurst Litter Pickers to do a litter pick around Turnhams Farm recreation ground.

Anyone is very welcome to come along and help clear litter between 9.30am and 11am on Saturday 25 March.  Please bear in mind that young people must be supervised by an adult.

Last year, we managed to collect 15 bags of rubbish in an hour – perhaps we’ll fill even more this time!

The Return of Sports in the Park Sessions in Tilehurst
The popular Sports in the Park sessions, which started last summer, are returning to Tilehurst this year, and have been extended to include the Easter holidays and May half term as well as the summer holidays. The first sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at all four parish recreation grounds – Cotswold, Cornwell, Turnhams Farm and Calcot – during the Easter holidays. No booking is required – just turn up and play!

There were 485 attendances at last summer’s sessions and hopefully this year’s will be just as popular, especially as Calcot recreation ground has been added in for the first time, so the sessions really do cover the whole parish.
