Tilehurst Parish Council Update

30 March 2023

Thank you, as always, to youth worker Jessica for this brilliant update!

Berkshire Youth is pleased to announce that Tilehurst Parish Council has agreed to renew our contract for a further year from April 2023. This will enable us to continue offering positive activities for young people across the parish and to expand this provision further.  We would like to thank Tilehurst Parish Council for its continued support and its commitment to young people in the community.

Youth Club
It’s been another busy month for Tilehurst Parish Council Youth Club, with the young people playing games to help them get to know each other better. We started with human bingo, where you have to find someone who matches each statement. Statements can be anything from ‘someone with size 5 feet’ to ‘someone who can lick their elbow’ or ‘someone who has a sister’. This gets young people talking and finding out about each other. We have also done some food tasting and cooking, and we have started to include some Easter‑themed food in the run up to the Easter holidays.

Young people also took part in a ‘Mini Medics’ first aid workshop, delivered by Katie from Berkshire Youth. In the workshop, they learned how to call for help, how to do CPR, the recovery position and bandaging. Here is some feedback from the young people:

“The session was good, I learnt CPR and the recovery position.”

“I enjoyed today’s session, I think it will be very useful.”

Feedback also showed that some of the attendees had already learned these skills so, for them, the workshop was a refresher, building on skills they already had.

Cotswold ‘Kicks’ Sessions
As a result of the continuation of funding from Tilehurst Parish Council, the Reading Football Club Community Trust ‘Kicks’ sessions can continue from April 2023 – March 2024.

These sessions run at Cotswold Sports Centre, Downs Way, RG31 6SL, from 4 – 5pm on Thursdays. They are delivered by a qualified sports coach from Reading Football Club Community Trust, who encourages young people to build on their football skills and play matches against each other. The sessions are term-time only; a full set of dates for April 2023 – March 2024 will be released shortly.

Sports in the Park Sessions in Tilehurst – Easter 2023
The sessions which proved so popular in the 2022 summer holidays are returning to Tilehurst and have been expanded to cover the Easter holidays, May half term and summer 2023. The Easter sessions will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the holidays and will be held at the four parish recreation grounds: Cotswold, Cornwell, Turnhams Farm and Calcot.

Last summer, we had 485 attendances at the summer sessions, so we hope they will be as popular this year. Calcot has been added as a new location so the whole parish is now covered and the sessions are available to more young people. No booking is required, they are turn up and play!
