Tilehurst Parish Council Update

28 July 2022

Here’s the latest update, from our youth worker Jessica, about the fantastic work taking place across Tilehurst.

On behalf of the Parish Council, Berkshire Youth has run a variety of activities for young people in Tilehurst. Sessions were open to those in school years 6 – 9, and run at a number of locations around the parish. Ongoing detached youth work is also being carried out and is aimed at all young people out and about in the community, as well as involving the general public and other members of the community, such as shopkeepers.

Detached Youth Work
Detached youth work has taken place in the early evening on weekdays with visits being made to local green spaces which young people go to after school, including Hildens Drive and Cotswold, Cornwell, Turnhams Farm and Calcot recreation grounds. Youth workers have engaged with groups of young people to learn about their activities in and out of school, to share information about activities available locally, and to find out what other activities might be of interest.

Cotswold Sports Sessions
Detached youth work led to a series of multisport sessions being held at Cotswold Sports Centre. Nine sessions for young people wishing to take part in sports were run on Thursday afternoons during term time. As a range of sports was included, attendees had at least three sports to choose from at each session. Young people were encouraged to say which sports they wanted to be offered the following week.

At each session, the team also engaged with both the sports centre and with young people in the area who were not at the sessions.

Art Club
As a result of the youth survey carried out in local secondary schools, an art club was run from the newly-refurbished Jubilee Annexe at the Calcot Centre. These sessions focused on art activities for young people, including: drawing, colouring, painting, clay and papier mâché. Over the course of the seven sessions, the group decided they wanted to create a big papier mâché house which they could work on each week!
