Waterside Community Larder

10 January 2022

We are delighted to launch the Waterside Community Larder this month, in partnership with Sofea and Fareshare. The community larder will help to tackle food waste and food insecurity in the local area.

Listen to our Operations Director, Sarah Emery, telling BBC Radio Berkshire listeners all about this new project here (approx. 3hrs8mins into the show).

Whilst food banks do a fantastic and very necessary job helping to support people who are experiencing food poverty, community larders are designed to support people to live more independently, “a hand up, not a handout”, a long-term sustainable approach to food insecurity. Working with Sofea and Fareshare, we will take supermarket warehouse excess and redistribute it in the local community.

We are delighted that Waterside Community Larder will be the third larder in West Berkshire, after the successful launches at Greenham and Thatcham.

The larder will be open every Tuesday, 2 – 4pm; people can come and select their items of food and other household products, as well as accessing other support services on site.  Local people can sign up as individuals or as a family for a small fee each week. This is not a means-tested service. This offer is available to all families with the costs of membership shown on this poster.

We are running a ‘Mock Larder’ on Tuesday 11 January, 2 – 4pm, which gives interested parties the chance to come visit us, sign up and ask any questions ahead of the launch on 18 January.

For further information or to sign up, please email us at: waterside@berkshireyouth.co.uk or phone us on 01635 018500.
