Waterside Update

30 September 2021

There has been so much happening at the Waterside Centre! We caught up with Kelly, our Youth and Community Manager, to find out more.

Following the amazing success of our summer holiday programme, September has seen Waterside Centre start to build its offer to the community both through Berkshire Youth programmes and through our partnerships with other organisations.

On a weekly basis we are joined by:

  • Thames Valley ABC; offering boxing sessions for young people and adults on a Tuesday and Thursday evening
  • Vox Fresh; a contemporary singing group offering sessions for children and young people in school years from Reception to Year 13
  • West Berkshire Youth Dance Company (Westies); offering dance sessions and rehearsals on a Friday, and soon on a Monday as well

Berkshire Youth has also chosen September to start the pilot programme of the Paddle Club for young people in school Years 7 to 11 on a Thursday after school. We have also partnered with the non-profit social enterprise BoxWise to offer a 13-week non-contact boxing course on a Wednesday evening for young people aged 12 to 16.

One weekend saw Waterside Centre once again host the Waterside Series event with over 100 paddlers participating in the event. It was great to see all of the paddlers back at the centre after so many years, and we are excited at the prospect of continuing to host the future events.

On 28 September, Waterside Centre launched a new Youth Hub in partnership with the DWP, where jobseekers under the age of 25 will be able to access support from Youth Employability Coaches from Jobcentre Plus and other organisations and schemes helping young people with their employment journey.

We will also be running a brilliant personal development programme for young people aged at the centre this October.

On top of all of this, our refurbishment of the Sports Hall floor has finally finished and the last checks, cleaning and set up of the climbing wall are underway. Over the next few weeks our focus will be moving to the preparation for opening the café and will be moving forward with the set up and opening of the café.
