A mental health awareness programme for young people.
We have developed a mental health awareness course for delivery in schools. The programme consists of a catalogue of twelve mental health topics, with the first five being part of a ‘core package’. Schools and groups have the option of adding on additional sessions. The topics are:
- Awareness of emotional health
- Dealing with stress
- Anxiety and depression
- Self-harm awareness
- Maintaining positive mental health
- Coping mechanisms
- Personality types
- Healthy relationships
- Managing behaviours and feelings
- Importance of individuality
The programme takes a flexible approach, delivering in response to need, demand and feedback and has recently created two additional sessions:
- Eating disorders
- Schizophrenia
Each session includes an explanation of what the topic is, as well as activities and discussions around the topic. Every session has a strong focus on how the young people can positively cope with day to day life, as well as having the skills to identify when they may need support with their mental health. By equipping young people with the skills to look after their mental health, as well as identify when they may require support, we are increasing the chance that young people will get the help they need, when they need it.
An awareness programme for adult professionals and volunteers is also offered which is called ‘Children and Young People’s Mental Health’. This programme aims to teach adult professionals and volunteers about young people’s mental health and how to work with those who may require extra support.
